MOVING CHECKLIST

Get deposits refunded (if you don’t ask, you won’t always receive them)

MEDICAL, DENTAL, PRESCRIPTION HISTORIES/ RECORDS/ REFERRALS:

Ask Doctors and Dentists for:

Referrals___, Transfer needed prescriptions___, eyeglasses___,

X-rays___, Medical records____, etc.____.

PETS: Consult a veterinarian about moving your pet. Obtain all records. Ask about local regulations for licenses, vaccinations, tags etc.

 

___ Empty freezer; plan use of refrigerated foods.
___ Defrost freezer and clean refrigerator (place charcoal inside to dispel odors whether moving it or leaving it.)
___ Have appliances serviced for moving.
___ Check with your moving ‘counselor’ about insurance coverage, packing and unpacking labor charges, arrival day, various shipping papers, method and time of expected payment.
___ Consider precious and fragile special packing and insurance coverages.
___ Plan for special care needs for pets.

Assemble in a separate box (last one loaded) all first day items including:

soap___, toilet paper___, pencils___, paper___, toiletries___, bath

towels___, utility knife___, screw drivers___, scissors___, trash bags___,

others_________________________________.

___ Find out about tax-deductible moving expenses so you can keep appropriate papers and receipts
___ Obtain all personal records from lawyers and accountants.
___ Assemble adequate packing materials.
___ Have car checked and serviced for trip.
___ Pack a day or two extra clothing in case of delay.

 

AND ON MOVING DAY:

___ Make a list of every item and box loaded onto the truck (color code with large dots and then color code room doors so movers make your unpacking job easier).
___ Carry jewelry and documents yourself or used registered mail to a neighbor.
___ Let a close friend know your route and schedule including overnight stops and use them as your message headquarters.
___ Double check closets, drawers, and shelves to sure they are empty (check those special hiding places for the extra keys etc.)
___ Turn off all appliances and lock all doors and windows.
___ Leave all old keys needed by new owner with neighbor or realtor.

Let the movers know where you can be reached.

 

AND AT YOUR NEW ADDRESS:

___ Make a list of every item and box loaded onto the truck (color code with large dots and then color code room doors so movers make your unpacking job easier).
___ Check off all boxes and items as they come off the truck.
___ Install new locks.
___ Check on services: gas, electricity, water, telephone, garbage, cable.
___ Check pilot light on stove, hot water heater and furnace.
___ Ask mail carrier for mail he / she may be holding for you.
___ Apply for CA driver’s license (within 30 days); register to vote.
___ Register car within 5 days after arrival in state or penalty may be assessed when getting new tags. I’ll show you where to go to get tags and licenses.
___ Obtain inspection sticker (depends on age of car and system in place).

Arrange for medical services: doctor, dentist, veterinarian, etc.
